How to Make The Most of Your Junk by Upcycling

Published 29 Mar 2016

Do you have a lot of old stuff lying around your house that you no longer use but can’t seem to be able to let go of? Many of us do, it’s not overly uncommon to get attached to our odds and ends. However, too much clutter is never good and getting rid of some old stuff can be great to make room, if you need to move or if you want to make your space tidier and nicer to be in.

Upcycle your Junk! Pallet furniture is trending.

One way of keeping your old stuff without having to donate it or throw it in a skip bin is to upcycle it. Upcycling is the process of transforming your old stuff into something that is usable or decorative. Let’s see what you can transform your stuff into!

To Read, or Not to Read?

If you have a bunch of old books that you no longer read but are still taking up space on the shelf, you could take them down and rip them up. Using the pages, get an old picture frame or something similar and make a collage. Stain the pages, paint over them and create a piece of artwork to gift or hang in your home – it will be unique!

A Cool Letterbox

If you have any old sturdy cases, cabinets, computer towers or things like that you could get the tools out and turn them into a letterbox that will get the whole street talking. Get out the paint and brushes too and you can decorate it to make it really colourful. You could also upcycle some timber or other bits and pieces to make the numbers of your house and attach them too.

In The Garden

The garden is a great place to create some upcycled wonders. You can use old cupboards, placed on their side and with their doors removed, as planters. You can use old picture or window frames as things for vines to grow along and you can decorate bits of it with bits of glass, mirror and marbles. You could even create a mosaic as a gorgeous centrepiece. Just get some old bits of tile, pavers and other things to stick together to make it one-of-a-kind.

Upcycle Your Fabrics

Do you have left over fabric, old gloves, clothes and other loose bits in your sewing kit or cupboard? There are heaps of things that you can do with them. You could create a jumbled, patchwork coat for a dress-up party or festival, sew bits together and stuff them to make a soft toy, or even create a collage piece of artwork to frame and hang.

You could even turn some spare fabric into a lightshade or light fitting. Just sew it into the appropriate shape and insert some stiff rods or other things to support it and hold it in shape!

Limitless Possibilities

Your imagination is really the limit when it comes to what you can do, so get those creative juices flowing and see what you can come up with!
